How To Unlock Your Speed Potential

In sports, speed is a difference maker. There are all sorts of different speed and agility drills athletes can do to help improve their quickness and footwork, and while these are beneficial in developing great habits that promote speed, they don’t always produce the results athletes are looking for. Instead, there are some other factors that should be focused on that will help you unlock your true speed potential.

At Warren Academy, we offer a variety of strength, speed and performance programs that are designed to help athletes achieve success on the field and court, and further grow their athleticism. While speed and agility training is a great way for athletes to take strides toward their speed goals, there are other things that will make that process quicker and easier.

Lower body strength

When it comes to unlocking your speed potential, lower body strength is absolutely needed. Speed is the by-product of force outputs, and more force translates into more speed. When wanting to improve your speed, one of the first things you should look at is improving your lower body strength. Everything from quads to hamstrings, calves and glutes. Doing so will ultimately help you drive more force when running, and help you achieve your speed goals much more efficiently.

Consistency

Strength, speed and agility training is something you need to do more than a couple of times to see results. You need consistent training in order to see results in the long term. By sticking to a training routine every week, athletes will start to notice more progress and reach more goals than ever before. However, you can’t just jump into a training program at full speed. Start slow, work your way up, and the more consistent you are, the more complex you will become in your workouts.

Vary your workouts

Just running every day will not make you faster. In order to see results, athletes need to mix up their workouts. Doing the same thing over and over is good in terms of consistency, but focusing on different areas of training is essential in seeing progress and results. For example, when looking to improve speed, you should be focusing on the lower body one day, sprinting the next day and mixing in agility drills the next. This approach will help athletes become much more rounded overall

Speed is so important in sports, and it is something that every athlete should be focusing on during the offseason. However, it takes more than just speed and agility drills to achieve speed success and unlock your speed potential. By focusing on lower body strength as well as consistent and varied training, all on top of speed and agility drills, you will notice better speed and performance more quickly and easily. Keep all of this in mind when trying to improve your speed this summer!
